Help keep our lake clean. Breakfast and lunch provided to all our volunteers. We need boats as well. It will get dirty but we will offer free pressure washing as well. If you can provide a boat please reach out to one of our board members or send a message via this web site.
We hope all our members had a safe and fun Labor Day Weekend. LWPOA has several new Board Members starting this fall.

All four bring unique talents and fresh enthusiasm to the LWPOA Board.
One of the first priorities of the new Board is to conduct a financial review of our organization. The Board has reviewed the financial data from 2024 and the first half of 2025. In 2024, LWPOA operated within budget at a breakeven point, with events (Kids Fishing Day, Buoys/Lake Safety, Water Testing, Winter & June Dinner, Lake Cleanup), and administrative expenses fully supported by member contributions. Yearly fixed expenses include the storage facility, insurance, secretary salary, water testing supplies and tax filing fees.
A significant portion of 2025 Membership revenue was received in 2024. This timing shift relates to the change in membership renewal dates and has influenced the cash flow distribution between the two years. In 2025, we are continuing to monitor and assess the impact of this change by reviewing our current expenses, looking for ways to utilize our member contributions wisely. For instance, the Board is considering changing from Constant Contact/GoDaddy to Zeffy for Email Communications and processing member payments and data. This change should save approximately $1600 per year when the transfer is complete. Zeffy provides non-profit operating software and fee free payment processing for non-profit organizations like LWPOA. Zeffy asks our membership for a voluntary donation when membership is paid; however, those donations are strictly voluntary. The Board is evaluating advertising-related postage and printing costs to reduce expenses and transition toward a paperless approach. We encourage all members to opt into digital communications and if LWPOA transitions to Zeffy, we encourage members to explore the platform during renewal-every small shift helps reduce costs and strengthen our community impact.
In 2025 LWPOA has replaced or deployed 7 new buoys. Several of the mile marker signs have also been repositioned because of shoreline erosion. Another development in 2025 is the cancellation of the LWPOA Kids Fishing Day. The large nets required to keep the catfish in the bay are badly damaged and Alabama Power can no longer support this activity.
The 2025 Lake Wedowee cleanup is scheduled for October 21,22,23. That is Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. LWPOA will be providing Roll-offs, breakfast/lunch and gas for boats participating in the cleanup. Last year we removed 5,680 lbs of trash from the bays of Lake Wedowee. Please consider joining us this October for the Lake Cleanup.
Even with over 5,000 pounds of trash removed from Lake Wedowee there are still bays that need attention. LWPOA is considering expanding the lake cleanup to a few weekends in 2026 before the lake level returns to full pool. We plan to hold these on weekends so more people can participate.
Lastly, the annual LWPOA fall meeting will be held Saturday September 20th at the Fire Department in downtown Wedowee. The meeting will be from 9 to noon and will include guest speakers from ALEA and Alabama Power Hydro Services. LWPOA Board feels these speakers will provide important insight into RL Harris Dam operation and the new State Laws designed to provide a safer lake experience for all. Brunch will be provided. Please join us on the 20th at the Wedowee Firehouse. https://evite.me/9HJCN8RjS5
Our annual fall meeting will take place Saturday September 20th from 9 to 12. We will gather at the Wedowee Volunteer Fire Department at 319 Broad Street. Brunch will be served.
The ALEA Troopers that take great care of Lake Wedowee informed LWPOA that several houses around the lake have buoys outside of the ALEA policy. If these Buoys are not removed by the homeowners they will be removed by the Troopers. LWPOA is trying to spread the word about lake regulations so we can all stay informed.
The Troopers noticed several that houses have the round orange buoys out that are 100 feet from out from their docks. The ALEA policy for Buoys is as follows:
Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) (ALEA) and may involve permitting and fees. ALEA is the sole authority for placing regulatory and navigational buoys on public waters. All other buoys, including swim buoys, must adhere to specific guidelines, such as being within 50 feet of the shoreline or 25 feet of a permitted dock and not interfering with boat traffic.
Here is information from Alabama Powers website.
Only the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is authorized to place regulatory, navigational buoys on public waters. All other buoys, per ALEA’s guidance, must adhere to the following:
Any buoys not complying with this guidance are subject to removal by ALEA. Thank you for your cooperation.
On Saturday evening , July 19th, the buoy at Mile Marker 10 on the Little Tallapoosa was damaged and floated away. This area is several 100 feet from shore and the lake quickly goes from 90 feet to 5 feet at full pool. This buoy was replaced last November and had the solar light repaired. About two months ago the Solar light was stolen off this buoy. Yesterday evening a Lake Wedowee State Trooper notified LWPOA of the missing hazard buoy. It was replaced this morning. A regular hazard buoy cost LWPOA about $400 to $500 to deploy. A lighted one is about $750. There are approximately 30 hazard buoys in Lake Wedowee. LWPOA replaced 6 hazard buoys already in 2025. If you are interested in a safe Lake Wedowee consider joining LWPOA. You don't need to own property to join. It costs only $50 per year to be a member and every penny goes to improving Lake Wedowee.
LWPOA deployed a new Hazard Buoy in the Fox Creek area. State Trooper Jarred Brown identified an elevated area in Fox Creek where the depth is only 3.5 feet at full pool. This area is several 100 yards from the closest shoreline. A special thanks to LWPOA member Ron Mattocks for helping steer the boat to the proper location.
Did you know that LWPOA is responsible for all Hazard Buoys on Lake Wedowee? Alabama Power manages the No Wake buoys but it is LWPOA membership dues that funds the Hazard Buoys around the lake. Each Hazard Buoy cost LWPOA about $400 to $500 to deploy.
The Lake Wedowee Property Owners Association 2025 membership directories are in the mail for those who did not attend the summer picnic at The Range,
The Lake Wedowee Property Owners Association would like to thank those that took time to provide feedback on what they would like the purpose and priorities of LWPOA to be. We will be evaluating this information over the coming weeks and share with you what we heard and any changes we may make as a result.
